Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational biologic therapy being studied by the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for the treatment of severe and enduring anorexia nervosa. The therapy involves the administration of a healthy donor fecal microbiota preparation, sourced from OpenBiome (FMP30), into the upper gastrointestinal tract via a nasogastric tube. As a live biotherapeutic product, FMT aims to modulate the patient's gut microbiota and the associated microbiome-gut-brain axis. The therapeutic goal is to positively influence weight regulation, metabolism, and anxiety behaviors associated with the eating disorder. The research is being conducted as an open-label pilot trial to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and tolerability of this approach.
