Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational biological therapy being evaluated by the University of Zurich for its potential to treat metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. The procedure involves the transfer of a processed suspension of fecal matter from a healthy, screened donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient—specifically patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and stable coronary artery disease—via colonoscopy. The therapeutic rationale is based on the 'gut-heart' axis, where gut dysbiosis is thought to drive systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. By restoring a healthy and diverse microbial community, the treatment aims to modulate the gut-brain-liver axis, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce the inflammatory milieu associated with atherosclerosis.
