Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a live biotherapeutic intervention being investigated by Weill Medical College of Cornell University (Weill Cornell Medicine) for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. The procedure involves the administration of a purified fecal microbiota preparation (FMP), typically sourced from healthy donors (such as through OpenBiome), into the colon of patients via colonoscopy. The therapeutic goal is to restore microbial diversity and correct the dysbiosis associated with ulcerative colitis. Research led by Dr. Randy Longman at Weill Cornell has identified that specific bacterial strains within the transplant, notably *Odoribacter splanchnicus*, contribute to efficacy by inducing anti-inflammatory regulatory T cells, stimulating the production of interleukin-10 (IL-10), and generating short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which help resolve intestinal inflammation.
