Overview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a microbial therapy being investigated by Zhujiang Hospital for the treatment of metabolic disorders. In the SETOM clinical trial, the procedure involves the administration of 200ml of donor-derived fecal microbiota suspension via a nasointestinal tube to patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and obesity. The therapeutic rationale is based on the gut-organ axis, where the introduction of a healthy microbial ecosystem aims to correct dysbiosis, enhance the production of beneficial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids, and ultimately improve glycemic control and promote weight loss by modulating systemic inflammation and insulin signaling pathways.
