Overview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a microbial therapy being investigated as an adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). In the clinical trial led by Gang Wang, FMT is administered in capsule form (1.0 g daily) to patients who have shown a suboptimal early response to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram. The therapeutic rationale is based on the gut-brain axis, where the restoration of a healthy and diverse intestinal microbiota is hypothesized to modulate systemic inflammation, metabolic pathways, and neurotransmitter signaling, thereby improving depressive symptoms. This specific intervention combines the microbiome-resetting potential of FMT with standard-of-care antidepressant therapy to enhance clinical outcomes in treatment-resistant or slow-responding populations.
