Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) + vancomycin is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). This approach combines oral vancomycin (an antibiotic that targets C. difficile) with the transplantation of fecal matter from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient to restore healthy gut microbiota. The combination has shown superior efficacy compared to vancomycin alone, particularly for recurrent or severe C. difficile infections. FMT works by replenishing the natural flora of the GI tract that has been harmed due to antibiotic use or overgrowth of harmful bacteria, while vancomycin helps to control the C. difficile infection directly. The FMT component can be administered through various routes including colonoscopy, enema, nasogastric tube, or oral capsules.
