Overview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational microbial therapy being developed by the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University as an adjunctive treatment for schizophrenia. The therapy involves the oral administration of encapsulated fecal microbiota derived from healthy donors to patients already receiving standard antipsychotic medications. This approach is based on the gut-brain axis hypothesis, which suggests that gut dysbiosis contributes to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia through systemic inflammation and metabolic disturbances. By restoring a healthy and diverse microbial community in the gut, FMT aims to alleviate psychiatric symptoms and potentially mitigate the metabolic side effects commonly associated with long-term antipsychotic use.
