Overview
An investigational fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) therapy developed by Peking University People's Hospital for the treatment of severe low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). [2, 3] This biologic, microbiome-based therapeutic involves transplanting live bacterial communities from the feces of healthy donors into patients who have developed severe bowel dysfunction following rectal cancer surgery. [2, 4] The primary goal is to restore the balance and diversity of the gut microbiota to improve bowel function, including symptoms like urgency, frequency, and incontinence. [3] The therapy is being evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, single-center clinical trial comparing its effectiveness against a probiotic formula in 40 patients. [2]
