Overview

Fentanyl (transdermal patch + oral transmucosal lozenge) is a combination of two pharmaceutical formulations of the potent synthetic opioid analgesic fentanyl. The transdermal patch delivers a continuous dose of fentanyl through the skin for up to 72 hours and is primarily used for managing severe chronic pain in opioid-tolerant patients. The oral transmucosal lozenge ("lollipop") provides rapid-onset pain relief by allowing absorption through the buccal mucosa and is typically indicated for breakthrough cancer pain in opioid-tolerant individuals. Fentanyl acts as a full agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, producing analgesia and euphoria but also carrying significant risks including respiratory depression and potential for abuse or overdose[1][3][4][8].
