Overview

Fermented brown rice (Aspergillus oryzae), commonly referred to as FBRA, is a functional food supplement and prebiotic developed by Genmai-Koso Co. Ltd. in Japan. It is produced by the fermentation of brown rice and rice bran using the fungus *Aspergillus oryzae*. FBRA is rich in dietary fiber and various bioactive metabolites generated during the fermentation process. It has been extensively studied for its potential chemopreventive and anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism of action involves the suppression of inflammatory cell infiltration and the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), Mac-1, CCL3, and CXCL2. Additionally, FBRA has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells through both death receptor and mitochondrial pathways. Research has demonstrated its ability to inhibit tumorigenesis in various models, including pancreatic, colorectal, bladder, and oral cancers, and it has also been investigated for potential benefits in type 1 diabetes.
