Ferric (59Fe) citrate is a radiopharmaceutical compound containing the radioactive isotope iron-59 (59Fe), which has a half-life of approximately 44.5 days and decays by emitting beta particles. It is primarily employed in medical research and diagnostic studies to investigate iron metabolism and kinetics within the body. This includes assessing plasma iron clearance, plasma iron turnover rate, and the incorporation of iron into new red blood cells. It can also be used to evaluate the spleen's role in red blood cell dynamics and to identify sites of red cell production, particularly in conditions such as myeloproliferative disorders. Ferric (59Fe) citrate is intended for research use only and is not approved for human or veterinary therapeutic applications.
