Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ferrous fumarate + ascorbic acid is a combination medication used primarily to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia and related conditions where iron supplementation is required. Ferrous fumarate provides elemental iron necessary for the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) enhances the absorption of non-heme iron from the gastrointestinal tract by reducing ferric to ferrous ions and may also promote movement of plasma iron to storage depots in tissues. This combination is especially useful in populations with increased need for iron such as during pregnancy or chronic illness[1][3][6]. The product is generally well tolerated orally due to the properties of ferrous fumarate.
