Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Timoferol is an oral iron supplement formulation containing ferrous sulfate and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). It is primarily indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. The ferrous sulfate component provides elemental iron, an essential constituent of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various enzymes, which is necessary for oxygen transport and cellular metabolism. The inclusion of ascorbic acid serves to enhance the intestinal absorption of iron by preventing its oxidation to the less soluble ferric state and maintaining it in the more absorbable ferrous state. In clinical practice, it is often evaluated in the context of postpartum recovery to address maternal anemia and its potential impact on mood disorders such as postpartum depression.
