Overview

Liberseal is a human plasma-derived topical fibrin sealant developed by the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS). It is a biological combination product consisting of two primary active components: fibrinogen and thrombin. When applied to a surgical site, thrombin enzymatically converts fibrinogen into fibrin, creating a stable physiological clot that mimics the final step of the natural coagulation cascade. This mechanism promotes hemostasis, tissue sealing, and wound closure. Liberseal is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials in the United Kingdom to assess its efficacy in promoting leg wound healing and reducing surgical wound complications, including infections, in patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with saphenous vein harvesting.
