Overview

Human fibrinogen is a plasma-derived coagulation factor (Factor I) that plays a critical role in the final stage of the blood coagulation cascade. Upon activation by thrombin, fibrinogen is converted into fibrin, which polymerizes to form a stable, insoluble mesh that stabilizes blood clots and prevents hemorrhage. Human fibrinogen concentrate is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute bleeding episodes in patients with congenital fibrinogen deficiency (afibrinogenemia or hypofibrinogenemia). LFB-Biotechnologies is currently evaluating a specific formulation, known by the code name **FGTW**, in Phase 3 clinical trials for the management of perioperative bleeding in adult patients undergoing complex cardiac surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass. This highly purified, double virus-inactivated concentrate aims to reduce the requirement for allogeneic blood product transfusions in surgical settings where acquired fibrinogen deficiency may occur.
