Human fibrinogen is a plasma-derived coagulation factor (Factor I) used as replacement therapy to restore hemostasis. It is the precursor to fibrin, which forms the structural basis of blood clots. In the final stage of the coagulation cascade, thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin monomers that polymerize to create a stable mesh. This drug is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute bleeding in patients with congenital fibrinogen deficiency, such as afibrinogenemia and hypofibrinogenemia. Additionally, it is being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (e.g., the ZEPLAST trial) for its ability to reduce or avoid allogeneic blood transfusions in high-risk cardiac surgery patients by managing acquired fibrinogen deficiency.
