A combination regimen consisting of the recombinant cytokine granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF, filgrastim) and the synthetic corticosteroid prednisone. This regimen is specifically utilized for the mobilization of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the peripheral blood in patients with poor-prognosis relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). In the context of the HALT-MS clinical trial, G-CSF acts as a growth factor that stimulates the production and release of stem cells for collection via apheresis prior to high-dose immunosuppressive therapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT). Prednisone is co-administered to mitigate the risk of MS relapses, which can be triggered by G-CSF-induced inflammation.
