This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of fish oil and colesevelam, being studied by the University of Manitoba as an adjunct to ezetimibe for the treatment of sitosterolemia. Colesevelam is a second-generation bile acid sequestrant that works by binding bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption and thereby promoting the excretion of plant sterols. Fish oil, containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is included for its potential to further modulate lipid metabolism and provide cardiovascular benefits. The combination aims to maximize the reduction of plasma sitosterol and other plant sterols in patients with sitosterolemia, a rare genetic disorder where these levels remain elevated despite standard ezetimibe treatment.
