Fish oil + ethanol is an experimental combination being studied by Yale University to evaluate the potential of omega-3 fatty acids for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The research focuses on whether fish oil supplementation can attenuate the subjective, cognitive, and motor effects induced by acute ethanol administration. Fish oil, which contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is known for its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties and may modulate neurotransmitter systems affected by alcohol, such as GABA and glutamate. This Phase 1 study in healthy social drinkers serves as a proof-of-concept to determine if fish oil can reduce the reinforcing effects of alcohol, potentially offering a novel nutritional approach to managing AUD.
