Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flexical is a specialized elemental medical food designed to provide complete, pre-digested nutrition for patients with severely impaired gastrointestinal function. Developed by Mead Johnson, it is formulated with proteins broken down into their constituent amino acids, carbohydrates as simple sugars, and fats as essential fatty acids, along with a full profile of vitamins and minerals. This elemental composition allows for rapid and near-complete absorption in the proximal small intestine, minimizing the need for pancreatic and biliary secretions and significantly reducing fecal residue. In the context of Crohn's disease, Flexical is used as a primary therapy to induce clinical remission, particularly in active small bowel disease, by providing bowel rest and reducing the inflammatory response associated with dietary antigens and gut microbiota activity.
