Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flibanserin + digoxin refers to the co-administration of two distinct pharmaceutical agents. Flibanserin is a 5-HT receptor modulator approved for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. It acts as an agonist at 5-HT1A receptors and antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, leading to decreased serotonin and increased dopamine and norepinephrine levels[5][6][7]. Originally developed by Boehringer Ingelheim as an antidepressant, it was later developed for HSDD by Sprout Pharmaceuticals[5]. Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside used primarily for mild to moderate heart failure and for controlling ventricular response rate in chronic atrial fibrillation. Its mechanism involves inhibition of sodium-potassium ATPase in cardiac myocytes (positive inotropy), increasing myocardial contractility while also exerting negative chronotropic effects via vagal stimulation[4][8]. When used together, flibanserin can increase blood levels of digoxin due to pharmacokinetic interactions that may raise the risk of digoxin toxicity; careful monitoring is required when these drugs are co-administered[1][2].
