FLU + CZO is a combined treatment regimen consisting of two beta-lactam antibiotics, flucloxacillin and cefazolin. Flucloxacillin is an antistaphylococcal penicillin, and cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin. Both agents exert their antibacterial effects by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. This specific combination is being evaluated in the TARGET III randomized pilot trial (NCT05655091), sponsored by University Hospital Basel, to treat complicated methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infections. The trial investigates whether optimizing delivery through continuous infusion and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) improves pharmacokinetic target attainment compared to standard intermittent bolus dosing.
