Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flucloxacillin + ceftriaxone is a combination of two beta-lactam antibiotics used together for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections, particularly in settings such as perioperative prophylaxis for prosthetic joint surgery and empirical therapy for serious infections like methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteraemia[1][3]. Flucloxacillin is a narrow-spectrum penicillinase-resistant penicillin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis[6][8]. Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria; it also acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to PBPs[4][10]. The combination may be chosen empirically or prophylactically to broaden antibacterial coverage, especially in surgical or high-risk infection scenarios.
