Overview

SBGC-fortified fluoride varnish is an investigational dental combination product developed by The University of Hong Kong for the prevention of root caries in older adults. The formulation consists of a 5% sodium fluoride varnish (Duraphat) supplemented with 7.5% strontium-doped bioactive glass (SBGC). The mechanism of action involves the synergistic release of fluoride, strontium, and calcium ions, which promote the remineralization of the tooth root surface. This process leads to the formation of strontium-substituted-hydroxyapatite and strontium-substituted-fluorohydroxyapatite, which exhibit enhanced bioactivity and reduced acid solubility compared to natural tooth mineral. It is currently being evaluated in a 36-month randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial.
