Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluorine (18F) PSMA-1007 is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer that targets prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). Originally developed by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and Heidelberg University Hospital, the tracer is a synthetic peptidomimetic containing a Glu-NH-CO-NH-Lys pharmacophore labeled with the radioisotope fluorine-18 (18F). It binds with high affinity to the extracellular domain of PSMA, which is highly overexpressed on prostate cancer cells, and is subsequently internalized, allowing for high-resolution visualization of primary and metastatic lesions. Unlike other PSMA-targeting tracers, fluorine (18F) PSMA-1007 exhibits minimal urinary excretion and is primarily cleared via the hepatobiliary system, which significantly reduces background noise in the pelvic region and improves the detection of local recurrences and pelvic lymph node metastases. It is approved in several European countries, Canada, and Switzerland for the primary staging of high-risk prostate cancer and the detection of biochemical recurrence.
