Fluorocholine (18F) Synektik is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic imaging agent used in positron emission tomography (PET). As a radioactive analog of choline, it is taken up by cells via choline transporters and phosphorylated by the enzyme choline kinase into 18F-phosphorylcholine, which becomes trapped within the cell membrane phospholipid synthesis pathway. Because malignant cells, such as those in prostate cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, often exhibit upregulated choline metabolism to support rapid membrane synthesis and proliferation, the tracer accumulates preferentially in these tissues. This allows for the PET-based detection and localization of primary tumors and metastases, particularly bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer. The product is developed and manufactured by the Polish company Synektik.
