This drug is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of fluorouracil and iproplatin. Fluorouracil (5FU) is a pyrimidine analog antimetabolite that interferes with DNA synthesis by inhibiting thymidylate synthetase, thereby blocking the conversion of deoxyuridylic acid to thymidylic acid. Iproplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent similar in class to cisplatin, which forms DNA crosslinks leading to apoptosis in rapidly dividing cancer cells. The combination works synergistically to destroy quickly dividing cancer cells and is used primarily for treating various cancers including head and neck cancers and gastric cancers. Administration is typically intravenous, often via central lines or PICC lines for continuous infusion over several days per cycle.
