This is a combination drug consisting of three components: - **Fluorouracil (5FU):** A pyrimidine analog antimetabolite chemotherapy agent that inhibits thymidylate synthase and interferes with DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. - **Leucovorin calcium (folinic acid):** A reduced form of folic acid that enhances the cytotoxic effect of fluorouracil by stabilizing the binding of fluorouracil’s active metabolite to thymidylate synthase. It is not itself a chemotherapy agent but acts as a biochemical modulator. - **Lactoferrin:** An iron-binding glycoprotein with immunomodulatory and potential anti-tumor properties. While not standard in chemotherapeutic regimens like FU-LV or FOLFIRI/FOLFOXIRI, lactoferrin has been studied for its ability to modulate immune responses and may have adjunctive benefits in cancer therapy. The combination aims to maximize anti-cancer efficacy through multiple mechanisms—direct cytotoxicity (fluorouracil), enhancement of cytotoxicity (leucovorin), and possible immunomodulation/anti-tumor effects (lactoferrin). Fluorouracil plus leucovorin is an established regimen for colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers[1][6]. The addition of lactoferrin is investigational or experimental.
