Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluorouracil implants are a sustained-release formulation of the antimetabolite 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), specifically designed for regional chemotherapy. Developed by Simcere Pharmaceutical, this product (marketed as Sinofuan in China) consists of 5-FU encapsulated within a biodegradable polymer matrix. This delivery system allows for the localized, high-concentration release of the drug directly at the tumor site or surgical bed over an extended period, typically several days, while minimizing systemic toxicity. Fluorouracil acts as a pyrimidine analogue that covalently binds to and inhibits thymidylate synthase, an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis, thereby inducing cell death in rapidly proliferating malignant cells. It is primarily utilized as an adjuvant treatment during surgical procedures, such as radical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), to reduce the risk of local recurrence.
