Overview

Fluoxetine + folic acid is a combination therapy involving the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine and the B-vitamin folic acid. Fluoxetine acts by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing its availability and improving mood in conditions such as major depressive disorder. Folic acid is essential for DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation, and low levels have been associated with poor response to antidepressants. Clinical studies indicate that co-administration of folic acid with fluoxetine can enhance antidepressant efficacy—particularly in women—and may reduce side effects compared to fluoxetine alone. The mechanism appears to involve both improved serotonergic neurotransmission (via SSRI action) and correction of subclinical or clinical folate deficiency, which may modulate homocysteine metabolism and support neurotransmitter synthesis[1][2][3][4][7].
