Fluoxetine + paroxetine is a combination of two selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), fluoxetine and paroxetine. Both drugs act by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) in the central nervous system, thereby increasing its availability in the synaptic cleft. This mechanism underlies their antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. Fluoxetine is commonly known by the brand name Prozac, while paroxetine is known as Paxil. Both are approved for major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and other indications individually[2][3][4][5][6]. However, combining these two SSRIs is not standard clinical practice due to a high risk of serious drug interactions—most notably serotonin syndrome—resulting from additive serotonergic effects[1][3]. The combination should generally be avoided except under specific circumstances such as supervised medication switching.
