Overview

This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of flurbiprofen axetil and ropivacaine, being evaluated for the management of postoperative pain following craniotomy. Flurbiprofen axetil is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prodrug formulated in emulsified lipid microspheres, which is hydrolyzed by esterases to its active form, flurbiprofen. It acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis at the site of injury. Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide-type local anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, preventing the conduction of nerve impulses. The combination is administered via pre-emptive scalp infiltration to provide superior analgesia and reduce the requirement for postoperative opioids. This specific regimen is being studied in a multicenter randomized controlled trial led by Beijing Tiantan Hospital.
