Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluticasone propionate + tulobuterol is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients: fluticasone propionate (an inhaled corticosteroid) and tulobuterol (a long-acting beta2-agonist). This combination is used for respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fluticasone propionate works as an anti-inflammatory agent by reducing inflammation in the airways, while tulobuterol acts as a bronchodilator by relaxing the muscles in the airways to improve breathing. This dual mechanism helps control symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. The search results indicate that tulobuterol is available as a patch formulation, as evidenced by a switchover study where patients used a tulobuterol patch before switching to salmeterol. Fluticasone is commonly used in inhalation formulations for asthma prevention. Side effects of this combination may include those associated with both components. For fluticasone, these can include throat irritation, hoarseness, thrush, headache, and cough. The beta-agonist component (tulobuterol) may cause effects similar to other beta-agonists such as tremor, headache, and potential cardiovascular effects. This combination appears to be used primarily for maintenance therapy of asthma and COPD, not for relief of acute symptoms or attacks that have already started. The combination of an inhaled corticosteroid with a long-acting beta-agonist is a common approach for managing persistent asthma, as recommended by international guidelines.
