Overview

Fluvax (2015-2016 season formulation) refers to the seasonal influenza vaccine produced under the Fluvax brand for the 2015-2016 influenza season. Influenza vaccines are designed to prevent influenza infection by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against specific influenza virus strains. These vaccines typically contain inactivated or weakened forms of the influenza virus antigens. The 2015-2016 formulation, like other seasonal flu vaccines, was available in trivalent (protecting against two A-strains and one B-strain) and quadrivalent (protecting against two A-strains and two B-strains) versions. The effectiveness of the 2014-2015 influenza vaccine, which would have been the preceding season's formulation, was notably low against the predominant A/H3N2 strain due to antigenic drift, where the circulating virus mutated after the vaccine strains were selected. Annual vaccination is necessary due to the continuous evolution of influenza virus strains.
