Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**folic acid + cholecalciferol** is an oral combination product containing folic acid and cholecalciferol used as a prescription nutritional supplement for patients with increased folate and vitamin D requirements. Folic acid replenishes reduced folate stores needed for one-carbon transfer reactions, nucleotide biosynthesis, DNA synthesis, and erythropoiesis, thereby correcting folate-deficiency megaloblastic and nutritional anemias. Cholecalciferol is vitamin D3, a prohormone that is converted to active vitamin D metabolites that promote intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption and support bone and mineral homeostasis. The combination is marketed under multiple brand names and is used for clinical dietary management and supplementation, including in anemia of nutritional origin, pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and folate-deficiency states such as tropical and nontropical sprue.
