Fondaparinux + heparin refers to the combination of two anticoagulant drugs used to prevent and treat blood clots. Fondaparinux is a synthetic pentasaccharide that selectively inhibits coagulation factor X by potentiating antithrombin III (ATIII), thereby interrupting the coagulation cascade and inhibiting thrombin formation[1][4][5][6]. It does not inhibit thrombin directly and has a lower risk of causing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) compared to heparin[3][5]. Heparin is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan that acts as an anticoagulant by binding to ATIII and accelerating its inhibition of several activated clotting factors, including both coagulation factor X and thrombin. Both drugs are used for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and in some cases for patients with HIT or at high risk for clotting events[2][3][4][5]. The combination may increase bleeding risk due to additive anticoagulant effects[1].
