Overview
APD209 is an oral combination therapy consisting of the long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist formoterol and the synthetic progestin megestrol acetate, developed by Acacia Pharma for the treatment of cancer-related cachexia. Megestrol acetate is an established agent for stimulating appetite and increasing body weight, primarily through fat mass accumulation. Formoterol is included to specifically address muscle wasting (sarcopenia) by activating beta-2 receptors in skeletal muscle, which promotes protein synthesis and inhibits protein degradation. By combining these two mechanisms, APD209 aims to improve both nutritional intake and lean body mass in patients with advanced malignancies. A Phase 2 pilot study was conducted to evaluate its efficacy and safety in this population.
