Overview

Fosfomycin + imipenem is an antibiotic combination therapy that demonstrates synergistic effects against various resistant bacterial pathogens. Fosfomycin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase (MurA), preventing peptidoglycan formation, while imipenem targets penicillin-binding proteins. This combination has shown particular efficacy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), including glycopeptide-intermediate and daptomycin-nonsusceptible strains, as well as multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria like Acinetobacter baumannii. It has been studied as salvage therapy for serious infections.
