Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A synbiotic combination composed of the probiotic bacterium *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* (Lp) and the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS). This formulation is being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment of food allergies, specifically soybean-induced allergies. Administered orally, the synbiotic works by modulating the gut microbiota—increasing the abundance of *Lachnospiraceae* and *Lactobacillus*—and restoring immune homeostasis. Preclinical studies have shown that the Lp-FOS intervention reduces levels of allergy-related immunoglobulins (IgE and IgG1), balances Th1/Th2 and Treg/Th17 cell populations, and improves intestinal barrier function. Additionally, it addresses metabolic dysregulation in the gut, particularly involving amino acid and tryptophan metabolism. Research is currently led by academic institutions such as Nanchang University.
