Fucosylated autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) is an experimental cell therapy being developed by Red de Terapia Celular for the treatment of established osteoporosis and low-impact fractures. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow cells, expanding the mesenchymal stem cell population under GMP conditions, and applying an ex vivo fucosylation process. This enzymatic modification adds fucose residues to cell surface glycoproteins, creating ligands for E-selectin. This process, known as GPS (Glycosyltransferase-Programmed Stereosubstitution), is designed to significantly enhance the cells' ability to home to the bone marrow (osteotropism) following intravenous administration. Once localized in the bone, these MSCs are intended to rebalance bone remodeling by stimulating osteoblast differentiation and bone formation while inhibiting osteoclast-mediated resorption.
