Fullerenol C60(OH)24 is a water-soluble polyhydroxylated derivative of the C60 fullerene. It acts primarily as a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger, capable of neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). In preclinical models of Parkinson's disease, such as those induced by MPTP, fullerenol has demonstrated neuroprotective effects by preserving dopaminergic neurotransmission and modulating the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). Its unique spherical carbon cage structure with multiple hydroxyl groups allows for high solubility and biological activity compared to pristine C60, making it a candidate for treating conditions characterized by high oxidative and nitrosative stress.
