Overview

Gallium citrate (67Ga) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical developed by the Khlopin Radium Institute for nuclear imaging. It contains the radionuclide Gallium-67, which acts as a biological analog of the ferric ion (Fe3+). Upon intravenous administration, gallium-67 binds to plasma transferrin and is transported to sites of malignancy or inflammation. In tumors, it is internalized via transferrin receptors (CD71) and binds to intracellular proteins such as ferritin and lactoferrin. In inflammatory or pyrogenic processes, it localizes due to increased vascular permeability and binding to lactoferrin released by leukocytes. It is primarily indicated for the visualization of Hodgkin's disease, lymphomas, lung cancer, hepatomas, and various metastases, as well as for the detection of sarcoidosis and acute inflammatory lesions.
