Overview

This investigational nutritional intervention is a specific combination of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs), including the omega-6 fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Developed for evaluation in clinical trials led by Sarah Keim at Nationwide Children's Hospital, the supplement is being studied for its potential to modulate biological signatures and improve behavioral symptoms in children aged 2 to 6 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). LCPUFAs are essential for neuronal membrane integrity and serve as precursors to signaling molecules that regulate neuroinflammation and neurotransmission. The study specifically monitors changes in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-2, and IFNγ to correlate biological changes with clinical improvements in ASD symptoms.
