Ganirelix acetate and cetrorelix acetate are synthetic decapeptides that function as potent gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists. In the context of infertility treatments, specifically those conducted at the Assaf-Harofeh Medical Center, these agents are utilized in a priming or pre-treatment protocol during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. The primary objective of this intervention is to suppress the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) by competitively blocking GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. This suppression prevents premature estradiol elevation and asynchronous follicular growth in patients presenting with high baseline estradiol levels or a leading follicle at the start of an IVF cycle. By synchronizing the antral follicle cohort, this protocol aims to improve cycle outcomes and reduce the necessity for cycle cancellation or postponement.
