Gardasil + Gardasil-9 refers to the combined use or co-administration of two prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines developed by Merck. - **Gardasil** is a quadrivalent vaccine containing recombinant L1 virus-like particles (VLPs) for HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. It is designed to prevent infection with these four HPV types, which are responsible for most cases of genital warts and a significant proportion of cervical and other anogenital cancers. - **Gardasil-9** is a nonavalent vaccine that contains VLPs for nine HPV types (6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58), providing broader protection against additional high-risk oncogenic strains beyond those covered by the original quadrivalent formulation. Both vaccines work by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the L1 protein of targeted HPV types through presentation as VLPs. The mechanism of action involves stimulating an immune response that prevents initial infection with these specific HPV serotypes. Both are classified as recombinant protein subunit vaccines using yeast expression systems[1][2][3][4]. The primary indication is prevention of diseases caused by targeted HPV types—including cervical cancer and precancerous lesions in females; vulvar and vaginal cancers; anal cancer; certain head-and-neck cancers; and genital warts in both sexes.
