Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin are fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics with excellent activity against respiratory tract pathogens, many gram-negative aerobic organisms, and Bacteroides fragilis. Both are available as oral and intravenous formulations with excellent bioavailability. They have more favorable pharmacodynamics against Streptococcus pneumoniae compared to levofloxacin or ciprofloxacin. Both are approved for treating acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and sinusitis. They are also available as ophthalmic solutions for bacterial conjunctivitis. Their toxicity profiles are similar to other fluoroquinolones.
