Overview
A **trivalent glycoconjugate vaccine** targeting Group B Streptococcus (GBS) serotypes Ia, Ib, and III, in which capsular polysaccharides (CPS) from these serotypes are covalently conjugated to the CRM197 protein (a nontoxic diphtheria toxin variant) to enhance immunogenicity. It is designed for administration to pregnant women, primarily during the third trimester, to induce serotype-specific maternal IgG antibodies that are actively transferred transplacentally to the fetus, providing passive protection against GBS infection in neonates. Immunization produces high titers of functional anti-capsular antibodies with opsonophagocytic activity. Developed by GlaxoSmithKline, the vaccine is in late-stage clinical trials for the prevention of maternal and neonatal GBS disease[1][4].
