Gefitinib + irinotecan is an investigational combination therapy consisting of two small molecule drugs used primarily in oncology research. Gefitinib is an oral epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks EGFR signaling pathways involved in tumor cell proliferation and survival. Irinotecan is a topoisomerase I inhibitor that interferes with DNA replication in cancer cells, leading to cell death. The combination has been studied for potential synergistic or additive antitumor effects, particularly in refractory solid tumors and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Gefitinib may also modulate drug resistance by inhibiting efflux pumps such as BCRP, potentially enhancing the efficacy of irinotecan[3][2].
