Gelaspan + Sterofundin ISO

Gelaspan + Sterofundin ISO is a combination therapy used for intravenous fluid management, particularly in perioperative and critical care settings. It consists of two components:

• Gelaspan is a 4% succinylated gelatin-based colloid solution designed for plasma volume replacement. It mimics physiological electrolyte composition to minimize metabolic disturbances and provides efficient intravascular volume expansion.
• Sterofundin ISO is an isotonic, balanced crystalloid infusion containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, calcium chloride dihydrate, sodium acetate trihydrate, and malic acid. Its electrolyte profile closely matches that of plasma to avoid hyperchloremia and metabolic acidosis.

The combination aims to optimize hemodynamic stability by providing both rapid plasma volume expansion (via the colloid) and physiologically balanced electrolyte replenishment (via the crystalloid). This regimen has demonstrated benefits such as reduced metabolic derangement (less hyperchloremia and acidosis) compared to unbalanced solutions in surgical patients. The mechanism of action involves direct intravascular volume expansion from gelatin polymers (colloid osmotic effect) alongside restoration of extracellular fluid balance with electrolytes.
