Overview

Gemcitabine + carboplatin is a combination chemotherapy regimen used primarily to treat various cancers including advanced ovarian cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and bladder cancer. Both drugs are administered intravenously in cycles of 21 days. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog antimetabolite that inhibits DNA synthesis by blocking the progression of cells through the G1/S-phase boundary and interfering with ribonucleotide reductase and DNA polymerization. Carboplatin is a platinum-based compound that causes crosslinking of DNA strands, leading to apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells such as cancer cells. The combination exploits different mechanisms to maximize cytotoxicity against tumor cells.
